I expect many of us who have visited the hospital have at one time or another used the Concourse or at least walked through it, but did you know that it has been open for nearly 25 years?
The concourse filled the area previously used as the main staff dining room and Poppies Restaurant, which had been opened in 1989.
On the 8 June 1995 the French chef Albert Roux, officially opened the new Concourse and food court. The food on offer included high street names, Burger King and Pizza Hut Express as well as Café Select and Upper Crust, this is not that unusual as over 100 hospitals have national fast food outlets in them today.
At the time of the opening of the Concourse here at Addenbrooke’s it was the largest food court in any British hospital. It was refurnished along with the new main entrance in 2001 and this time it was opened by the jockey Frankie Dettori. Frankie had been treated at Addenbrooke’s the year before after a ‘plane crash at Newmarket.
